Jason

The beat of the music pounded through my earphones, drowning out the loud rattle of the subway trains. I was in the zone. My heart was racing, my feet striking the pavement with the rhythm of the baseline, as I ran.
The monotony of city life swamped me in the day, but running brought me back from it at night.
God, I missed home, and fuck it was cold.
Too cold to snow. I heard the words Dad always repeated. I’d always thought it a myth. Was it ever too cold to snow? I didn’t know, but people had been saying it all day.
The pavement was dry, not icy. Dry with cold. There was no moisture in the air, only the cloud of my breath, as my lungs filled and then exhaled with the pace of my strides.
Maybe it was true. God, there were so many myths in the world. Like, New York was the place to be. It still felt like new shoes to me, like it just didn’t fit.
The tarmac felt firm beneath my sneakers.
I looked forward, trying to increase my pace and energy, burning away the doubts and disappointments I’d felt since I came to the city.
At the end of the bridge there was a figure, caught in the middle of a beam of orange lamplight, like some illuminated angel. I generally only saw other guys jogging on the bridge path. It was rare to see anyone else.
It was Thanksgiving in little over a week and Christmas in a few weeks. Lindy was pissed I wasn’t going back home, but she’d made up her mind to come to me for Christmas.
Was that good or bad?
The figure was facing the Brooklyn Bridge, probably looking at the reflection of the lights glinting and shifting on the dark water. It was mesmerizing when you focused on it.
The Manhattan Bridge was never busy, probably because of the noise of the trains. The environment didn’t inspire pleasure, so it wasn’t a place for tourists. But it was a good path for running, long and straight, and normally empty.
I ran harder, my eyes focusing on the figure.
The person hadn’t moved. They held their hands up, gripping the metal grill above them.
The pose seemed odd. A little desperate. It wasn’t casual.
My imagination shifted, no longer picturing angels but a horror movie. The way the lamplight shone down on the figure, could be like they were in the sights of a hovering helicopter, or a beam from a UFO.
I thought of Christmas again, and ached for home. But I wasn’t going home. I had to conquer New York.
The light shining down on the stranger, suddenly took the form of a Godly benediction once more. The person’s arms shifted, stretching out, similar to a crucifixion pose, hands wide and high, as they looked upward.
I was getting nearer.
My fingers were numb with the cold, even inside my gloves, and my ears burned as jack-frost nipped beneath my hood. Running should’ve kept me warm, but it was twenty-one degrees Fahrenheit, way below freezing point.
Fuck, now I could see the person ahead was standing in a t-shirt. Their out-stretched arms were bare.
“Hey!” My heart rate thundered as I ran on, wondering what sort of city-nutter I was running toward. What were they doing wearing a tee in this weather? It didn’t look like a homeless dude, but…
My breaths grew more uneven.
The guy ahead hadn’t heard me.
I pulled my earphones out. “Hey!”
Still no recognition. It was like they were in some sort of trance.
My feet pounded on the concrete.
It wasn’t a guy, it was a girl. I’d seen the long hair way back, but hadn’t been sure. Plenty of guys had long hair. Now, I could see.
I knocked my hood back. I didn’t want to scare her. “Hey!”

When she finally completed a novel it was because she was determined not to reach forty still saying, I want to write. Now Jane is writing a Regency series and contemporary, new adult, stories and she is thrilled to be giving her characters life in others’ imaginations at last. You might think that Jane was inspired to write by Jane Austen, especially as she lives near Bath in the United Kingdom, but you would be wrong. Jane’s favourite author is Anya Seton, and the book which drew her into the bliss of falling into historical imagination was ‘Katherine’ a story crafted from reality. Jane has drawn on this inspiration to discover other real-life love stories, reading memoirs and letters to capture elements of the past, and she uses them to create more realistic plots. ‘Basically I love history and I am sucker for a love story. COVER REVEAL: Escape the Doubt by Andrea Michelle

Escape the Doubt

by Andrea Michelle

Synopsis

Is taking a chance with your heart worth the escape, or was it better to have never loved at all? Can forgiveness really set you free?

After the unexpected death of her Dad, and the haunting manner in which he died, Riley Shaw built invisible walls around her heart. Barriers she created to protect her from splintering into broken pieces that couldn’t be repaired. She was unable to move forward from her past letting the guilt of her parent’s mistakes dictate her own choices.

Dean Warren was safe. Being with him was innocent and peaceful, because she didn’t truly love him. His words held her captive in a false sense of security. His eyes were deceptive, and his promises of never pushing her beyond what she was willing to give were broken, leaving Riley in a state of regret and doubt.

Joshua Parker had the power to take what was left of Riley’s splintered pieces and ruin her completely or make her whole again. He was her best friend, her next-door neighbor - everything she wanted and settled on never having. Loving him was as easy as breathing air. The fear of losing him forever was more real to her than the feelings she couldn’t escape.

When faced with the very thing she feared the most, and in the arms she thought were safe, Riley finds herself questioning every decision she has made over the past two years. When she finally escapes the doubt in her head, and accepts the truth in her heart, is it too late?

I'm so close to the edge of the cliff that I know with one more breath, one more inch, I could fall.” -Riley Shaw

About Andrea

Andrea Michelle was born and raised in Louisiana. She spent years in Tennessee, and in Texas, and has made it full circle back to the boot she loves so much. She currently lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is a mother to three beautiful daughters, and married her best friend at the young age of nineteen. She is a Coming-of-age, YA/NA Romance author with a debut, Escape the Doubt, available now. She is a dreamer, a true Gemini at heart and has a fascination with love stories. She finds inspirations in all things (friends beware) and loves poetry and music. Her writing journey began as a young teen where she used to escape into a world of fiction and poetry just to cope with emotions she didn't understand. Shhh... she has a secret. She wasn't an avid reader until her adult years. Once she realized she loved this escape, her addiction to the one clicker became an obsession that cannot be tamed. It's an issue... she is a one-click-aholic and has no intention of kicking this habit. She is not genre specific as a reader and will read anything and everything. She will not be genre specific as a writer, either. So expect to see her outside the box, too. She is excited yet nervous to share her passion with you, but looks forward to the journey ahead. She loves to hear from her readers and encourages those connections. Links below so you can friend her, like her, follow and support her.

MODEL SPOTLIGHT by Amanda: Grant Mroz

Today I'm introducing a new post type, in which my assistant blogger Amanda has taken her interviewing skills to the models we see so often on the covers of indie books.  To kick this off, I'd like to introduce you to Model Grant Mroz.  You might have seen Grant on the cover of a book by Lila Felix, Raine Thomas, or Michele G. Miller. He has worked with the fabulous Kelsey of K. Keeton Designs as well as working with several modeling agencies.  With no further ado...

The Interview

Amanda:  "Tell me how you got introduced to the world of modeling."
Grant:  "My old roommate was a student at Paul Mitchell of Hair and Makeup and every year they have a fashion show. Well my roommate asked me if I wanted to be his model for the show and I said,"sure". haha Then, directly after the show I was grabbing my things and another model in the show walked up to me and asked me if I'd be interested in modeling for book covers. Naturally I said yes….and now I'm here. lol"

Amanda:  "Do you have any other ventures or careers?"
Grant:  "I am actually graduating this semester with a degree in Electronic Media Production."

Amanda:  "What song do you currently repeat the most on your mp3 player?"
Grant:  "Hero by Skillet"

Amanda:  "It's your cheat day, what food do you have to have?"
Grant:  "I have to have something with grease. Whether that be a large pizza, a double cheese burger with curly fries, or a big steak. Then with that I have to have some cookies and maybe some ice cream (I'm a fat kid at heart). lol"

Amanda:  "What is one thing about yourself that most people wouldn't know or guess about you?"
Grant:   "I like to be alone a lot. I wouldn't say I'm an introverted, I just like the silence. If you think about your day, how often are you around people or just some kind of ambient noise that you can't control? I like to sit in my living room when my roommates (2 of them) aren't home and just rest on the couch either with my laptop, read a book, watch a video, or play video games. I realize that some of those have noise…but I can control how loud it gets."

Amanda:  "Do you have a guilty pleasure?"
Grant:  "Without a doubt, my guilty pleasure is chocolate chip cookies with milk (you can't have cookies without milk). Hahaha"

Amanda:  "What is your drink of choice from Starbucks?"
Grant:  "Well, now that I try to be healthier I don't get my "drink of choice" anymore. lol However, if was able to get it, it would be the Mouthgasm: -Venti Mocha Frappe (pronounced Frap……not Frap-Eh) with Mocha and Caramel Drizzle around the sides of the cup.-and please don't ask your local barista for a Mouthgasm…..they might look at you weird. I made that name up. lol"

Amanda:  "If you had a super power what would it be?"
Grant:  "My superpower would be Flying or Teleportation."

Amanda:  "Describe how you would spend the perfect date."
Grant:  "I'm pretty old fashioned. So I would say either a dinner and a movie then maybe go for a walk and chat or going to a cafe for coffee (or tea in my case), chat for a bit and then go for a walk somewhere in the country where there isn't a bunch of lights so we can look at all the stars."

Amanda:  "Are you a night owl or an early bird?"
Grant:  "It really depends on the day. If I don't work the next day I stay up late, but at the same time I have no problem waking up early."

Amanda:  "What is your star sign?"
Grant:  "I'm Aquarius"

Amanda:  "What non physical trait do you find sexiest in a person?"
Grant:  "Well I guess that just leaves their personality. lol"

Amanda:  "What is your favorite movie?"
Grant:  "Hmmmm……I'll list my top 5, because I like all of them equally.
-Count of Monty Cristo
-Gladiator
-The Passion
-The Patriot
-The Notebook (dead serious, makes me tear up every time at the end….that old man…)"

Amanda:  "What would your dream modeling gig be?"
Grant:  "Being on Men's Fitness or GQ"

Amanda: "Leave us with a description of your most memorable shoot to date."
Grant:  "My most memorable shoot so far would be just a few weeks ago. We took a limo and had wine and chatted while we were being driven to a different city where we were able to stay at a resort. We had dinner at this steak restaurant (I had a turkey salad bowl), then went back to the resort and hung out at the indoor pool and hot tub, and then called it a night.

The next morning we were treated to a breakfast buffet and then we headed to our shoot. The place we were shooting was in the middle of renovating, but that didn't spoil the excitement and feel of the shoot. We were greeted with a few different backdrops and themes (all were interesting and very well put together) in a big open room, so we could see all the different themes that were in store.

In the far left-corner was the boudoir theme; the golden head-board and foot-board with big down-pillows, white sheets and furry carpet.

In the middle of the room was the Steam-punk theme; a backdrop of this elaborate stair-case and fancy red/maroon chaise. The chaise was surrounded by old fashioned suit cases, a bird cage (similar to Harry Potter's), a big hourglass, and a homemade metal spider (it's name is Steve). Lol.

If you looked to the right of the room you would see the Mystical theme; it had fake grass covering the ground, with an array of plants on either side of the backdrop. The backdrop was absolutely b-e-a-utiful, it looks like it had been hand painted (it wasn't), but when you looked at the photo it had looked like fairies were real.

In the back of the building was the waiting/changing room with a stocked fridge with bottled water, some snacks if we got hungry and also a little area for hair and makeup."

As you can see, Grant is quite the character!  Make sure to look for him in the future, I see big things happening for him! :)  I'll leave you with some more pictures of Grant to savor.  Thank you Amanda and Grant for this entertaining interview!

Excerpt
“So …” One of his fingers tucked a strand of blond hair behind my ear. “How are you feeling?”
I didn’t know how to answer that question. “Completely uneven, though my balance is better than ever,” I admitted. How long would it take to get used to the new me? Would I ever? Drawing breaths out of habit rather than necessity? The air still pulled in and out of my lungs, though I no longer needed it to survive. If I made a conscious effort to stop the repetitive act, no pressure built in my chest, no dizziness threatened my consciousness.
I would never grow old or die by natural means. My face, my hair, my body would never change. Not again anyway.
“Is it a good feeling?” Caden’s fingers clasped my hand, his thumb rubbing over the meaty part of my palm. I closed my eyes and tipped my head back, reveling in the sensation, like an all-consuming itch finally scratched. Since waking, the urge to be in constant physical contact with Caden had been almost overwhelming. It was as if my skin had been stripped back, exposing every nerve ending. Only it didn’t hurt.
Far from it.
It was a euphoria I’d never experienced and I couldn’t get enough.
Cracking an eyelid to peek at him, I caught a smirk that told me he could sense my reaction to his touch, though I knew that’s not what his question referred to. “I don’t know. How am I supposed to feel?” My new life had begun mere hours ago, when I woke on a dank dirt floor to a world of possibilities. And unpleasant anticipation. “I guess I’m just … waiting for the inevitable.” For the uncontrollable urge to kill to hit me.
Despite other distractions competing for my attention, that anxiety lingered like a vicious thorn. Sofie promised me that it was only a matter of time until the first human crossed my path and tested my control. And she also promised me that I would have none.
I dreaded that.
I desperately wanted to skip over that part. Heck, I wanted to not need any blood to survive at all. I wanted to be immune to it.
But nothing I wanted had ever come easy so there was no reason to believe it would be different now.
“Yeah, so am I,” Caden whispered under his breath, a hint of wariness in his tenor. He followed it quickly with, “But how do you feel?”
How did I describe this? “Alive? I guess? Like I’m bursting with energy? Like I could run forever.” This strange bubble of something had taken up residence in the pit of my stomach. A ball of energy or thrill or eagerness. Or all three. I didn’t know what it was exactly but I was keenly aware of its presence, almost a tangible force inside, ready to explode. Perhaps that was the impending hunger?
